Make Money in the Music Industry


As an Assistant Professor of Recording Arts & Technology, one ?f th? first thing I'm asked by parents ?f prospective students is whether ?r n?t it'? ?oss?bl? t? make ? living ?n the music industry. Obviously, this ?? ? difficult question. I can't promise an??ne that th??'ll b? ?ble to make a living working in the music industry b???use th?y ?ll have d?ffer?nt interests ?nd skill-sets. However, what I ?an provide is ? list ?f what my form?r students ?r? doing. So, h?re's a list ?f 29 ways my form?r students make money ?n th? music industry.

1. Performer - Obviously, this i? th? ?ne that ?v?ryon? thinks of. Everyone want? t? be a rock star at ??me point ?n th?ir life. And everyon? assumes the?'re the one? making all of th? money, whi?h ?sn't alw?ys th? case. But th?t'? a topic for an?th?r day.

2. Live Sound Engineer - This audio professional ?s responsible f?r making ???h live performance sound ?? good a? possible.

3. Recording Engineer - This audio professional ?? responsible f?r th? fir?t part of th? recording process know as tracking. This is wher? all of the individual parts ?r? recorded.

4. Mixing Engineer - Once ?ll ?f the parts h?ve b??n recorded, th?y are handed ?v?r to the mixing engineer. The mixing engineer adjusts th? levels of ?a?h part t? create th? final mix.

5. Mastering Engineer - The mastering engineer ?s the l??t person involved in th? recording process. They concentrate ?n making sure th?t all ?f the songs on the CD work w?ll together, ?? ? whole. Often times the? hav? t? adjust the level of ?n? song a? compared to ?n?ther so th?t ?t ??n't jarring to the listener.

6. Pro Tools Operator - This ?s ? specialised type of recording engineer th?t ?nl? runs Pro Tools software. You can actually go t? school for this t? bec?me a Certified Pro Tools operator, ?nd ?f you d? ??u m?ght h?v? m? ?s ?our professor.

7. Intern - This ?s h?w man? people start ?ut in the music industry. Sometimes interns get paid, s?m?t?mes th?y don't. Either way, ?t'? still ?ft?n th? be?t w?y t? get ??ur "foot ?n the door". Just b? ready t? clean ? lot ?f toilets and take a lot of coffee and food orders.

8. Teacher - There ?re music teachers at all levels ?f the music business fr?m th? guitar teacher ?t th? neighborhood music store, to the band teacher at the high school, to th? vocal coach ?f the stars.

9. Manager - The manager ?s responsible f?r overseeing th? artist's or band's career. They are like ? head coach ?n that the? advise the performer a? th?y assemble th?ir professional team of agents, business managers ?nd lawyers.

10. Booking Agent - This is th? member ?f the artist's team that is responsible for booking performances. Many people get th? jobs ?f the manager ?nd the agent confused. In ?ert??n states ?t'? a?tuall? illegal for managers t? book performances for artists.

11. Publicist - This member ?f the artist's team i? responsible f?r generating publicity, usually ?n th? form ?f newspaper, magazine ?nd TV coverage.

12. Club Owner - This ?n? i? easy to understand. Basically, th?s includes ?n??n? that owns a live music venue wh?ther it b? a club, bar or coffee house.

13. Recording Studio Owner - Sometimes th?? ?s th? ??me person ?s the recording, mixing or mastering engineer, oth?r times it'? simply a business person.

14. Graphic Designer - This visual artist i? responsible f?r designing wh?t?v?r artwork the artist n??ds ranging from CD covers t? posters.

15. Web Designer - It's th? job of the web designer t? build ?nd maintain th? artist's website. They m?? incorporate portions of the graphic designer's work ?n th? design of th? website.

16. Producer - The producer ?? responsible f?r overseeing th? entire recording process. Traditionally, th?? chose the songs for the artist and hired th? recording engineers and studio musicians. Nowadays, it's quit? common for the producer to als? b? a songwriter, performer and recording engineer ?s well.

17. Songwriter - Some artists write the?r own songs. Those that don't ne?d new material every time th?y record ? new CD. That's wh?re the songwriter c?m?s in.

18. Film Composer - Another ?ne th?t'? pretty obvious. Film composers write all ?f th? music n?ce?sar? f?r ? movie.

19. Jingle Writer - This ?? ? v?r? specialized songwriter who writes music for radio ?nd TV commercials.

20. Publisher - The job of the publisher ?s to represent composers and songwriters ?nd g?t their music used in movies and ?n TV.

21. Merchandiser - The merchandiser is responsible for putting th? artist's likeness on an endless variety ?f products. Everyone that owns ?t lea?t ?ne concert t-shirt ha? a merchandiser t? thank.

22. Journalist - In the past, this job was limited to a f?w magazines and newspapers but now, with the internet, th?re ?re literally thousands of sites discussing ?v?r? genre ?f music imaginable.

23. Equipment Designer/Manufacturer - Someone needs to make all of the cool gear that the artists us? on stage ?nd in th? studio.

24. Equipment Retailer - I kn?w fr?m first-hand experience th?t y?u ??n make ? r?ally good living working for ?ne of th? larger equipment retailers l?k? Sweetwater Sound, Musician's Friend or Guitar Center.

25. TV/Film Music Supervisor - This ?? th? person that finds the perfect songs and music f?r e??h TV show and movie. They usu?ll? work very closely w?th th? director ?? well music publishers.

26. Record Label Owner - Nowadays, these ?re e?th?r multi-national companies (the major labels), ?r music lovers (the smaller independent labels).

27. Entertainment Lawyer - The music industry ?s full of ?ll diff?r?nt types of contracts. You n??d an attorney th?t ?s familiar with th?s? specialized documents.

28. Business Manager - Works closely with the artist t? ensure that the?r bills are paid ?nd that th?ir money i? well cared for.

29. Rehearsal Space Owner - This may b? on? that m?n? people d?n't think ?f but th?re ar? rehearsal studios ?n ?ust ?bout ev?r? medium to large city.
