Online gaming ? not a good bet, say New Jerseyans | Meadowlands ...

Just four days after a bill that could make New Jersey the first state to offer online gaming passed an Assembly committee in Trenton, a poll has come out showing widespread opposition to the idea.

That?s in contrast to sports betting at casinos and racetracks, by the way, which got more than 65 percent of the vote in November even with a federal ban on such wagering. The Fairleigh Dickinson University Public Mind poll found that sentiment remains, with 60 percent favoring and 26 percent opposing.

But to the question of ?Do you favor or oppose allowing New Jersey casinos to run betting games online, over the Internet, for people in New Jersey, 58 percent opposed the idea with 31 percent supporting. Democrats and Republicans voted the same way, while independents ?only? opposed by 47-39.

Interestingly, the opposition was 61-29 when the word used was ?gambling? vs 56-33 when the word was ?gaming.? And you wonder why ?gaming? rules the language of the debate.

Meanwhile, these polls confound supporters of online gambling ? er, gaming ? for a specific reason:

Research has shown that a wide swath of New Jerseyans don?t believe horse racing fans can bet on the internet ? they can. And once that is pointed out, polling has shown that since the republic has not fallen in spite of that permitted gambling, many polled change their minds and figure that maybe online gaming is ok after all.

What?s behind the leeriness to allow online gaming? Here?s a clue. Asked if they were confident that the state would prevent people from spending too much on those games, 60 percent were ?not at all? confident and another 19 percent were ?not very.?

Online lottery ticket sales in the poll were only opposed by a 48-43 figure.

Overall, though, 79 percent of those polled believe it is ?people?s responsibility? not to overspend, while only 16 percent said it is the state?s responsibility.
