James-Michael Johnson
middle linebacker
How he fared: Johnson rested on almost all of his combine numbers and only wanted to improve in the 3-cone drill, in which he ran a 7.34 at the combine.
Highlight of the day: Ran an unofficial 6.9 in the 3-come drill.
Quote of the day: ?There?s not really no pressure. The combine was pressure. This is nothing, really. This is a workout.? ? Johnson
Projection: 5th- to 7th-round
Brandon M. Marshall
outside linebacker
How he fared: Like Johnson, Marshall let some of his combine numbers stand and took part only in the 40, jumps and position drills.
Highlight of the day: Improved his 40 time nearly 1? seconds, from a 4.76 at the combine to a 4.62 on Wednesday.
Quote of the day: ?I?m just excited, taking it all in. Not really nerve-wracking yet. Maybe the closer it gets I might start getting a little nervous.? ? Marshall
Projection: 6th-round to free agent ? Marshall elevated his status at the combine, but there?s a lot of competition at outside linebacker
Rishard Matthews
wide receiver
How he fared: Matthews probably made more of an impression catching passes from quarterback Tyler Lantrip than he did in the drills in which he participated.
Highlight of the day: Ran a 4.45 and a 4.46 in the 40; ran a 4.62 at the combine.
Quote of the day: ?You guys don?t get to see the behind-the-scenes stuff (at the combine). It?s pretty stressful. ? I?ll be Mr. Irrelevant (the last player drafted). I don?t care.? ? Matthews
Projection: 6th-round to free agent ? Coming off a ligament tear in his knee.
Brett Roy
defensive lineman/linebacker
How he fared: Roy improved on almost every number in which he tested .
Highlight of the day: He shaved more than two-tenths of a second off his combine time in the 40, going from a 5.07 to a 4.84.
Quote of the day: ?What these tests don?t prove is you can?t cut a guy?s chest open and look at his heart, and for me that?s a big part of my game, my hustle and my heart.? ? Roy
Projection: 5th-round to free agent ? Seen as an outside LB by some, lineman by others.
Others ...
There were scouts from 17 teams on hand to watch 17 former Wolf Pack players test in such drills as the 40-yard dash, broad jump, vertical jump, cone drills and bench press. Here?s a few others who stood out:
Isaiah Frey, cornerback: Ran a 4.45 in the 40; his only opportunity to show himself in front of scouts; high IQ gives him a chance at a position (cornerback) that values intelligence.
Tyler Lantrip, quarterback: QB coach Roger Theder said, ?(his problem is) he hasn?t played quarterback in five years, but Tyler is just as good a quarterback as Colin Kaepernick.?
