Cyprus suggests small deposits be tax exempt: parliamentary official

Nicosia (Reuters) - The Cypriot government is suggesting that deposits up to 20,000 euros be exempt from a bank levy announced over the weekend that the island needs to avert a default, a parliamentary official said on Monday.

Remaining deposits up to 100,000 euros would be taxed at 6.7 percent and deposits exceeding that would be taxed at 9.9 percent, the official said on condition of anonymity.

The source said Cyprus's proposal would expect that bank depositors would be compensated with shares and government bonds related to future proceeds from gas earnings.

Under the terms of a deal brokered with euro zone finance ministers on Friday, Cypriot authorities were to impose a 6.7 percent tax on bank deposits under 100,000 euros and a levy of 9.9. percent on deposits exceeding 100,000 euros.

HEALTH MYTHS | Jason Christoff's Blog

Everyone wants to be healthy. No one gets up in the morning and declares that they?ll dedicate the next couple years to the pursuit of weight gain and disease acquisition. Everyone has the best intentions for themselves in regards to how they look, their weight and their state of health yet today we see obesity rates hitting close to 35% and ?overweight? rates closing in on 70%.

This occurs for many reasons but one of the biggest is the refusal of the mainstream media, conventional medicine and key governmental bodies to stand down on many foundational health myths. It?s obvious the outdated health claims I?m going to discuss are indeed myths because when you apply them directly into your life your health gets worse and your weight often increases (if not skyrockets).

It doesn?t matter which over-schooled person declares that? ?so and so? is healthy for you, your body is always going to give you the final ruling on the issue. The truth is not owned by science or a group of scientists or a medical journal or me for that matter. We as a society have been hypnotized into a deep coma by science, medical journals and the fictitious hierarchy of education that often makes us take orders from science without giving anything science declares a second thought. Basically if science is in charge of our health care system, why aren?t we permitted to take science to task for its? disastrous health outcomes over the past 50 years?

Are we brave enough, as a society, to consider that science is the wrong alter to be praying at and that our health can only improve with support/love and not attacking/poisoning and organ removal/replacement? Are we brave enough to see that attacking ourselves with processed foods, alcohol and excessive life expectations is the primary cause of our initial dysfunction and disease states.

If we?re brave enough to look that issue in the eye, can we then dare understand that attacking that initial disease state with toxic medications, more processed foods and? surgeries only makes our health worse and furthers our societal collapse? If we aren?t brave enough to look at the hard issues, our society will collapse guaranteed and we?ll be plunged back into the dark ages in order to start again.

There are concrete reasons why ideas that increase negative outcomes are fortified instead of dismantled inside our present society. One reason is the amount of people employed within the dysfunctional systems. It would appear systems that don?t work are now the norm and instead of trying to always correct the systems that are literally uncorrectable we need to investigate why most people take comfort in the status quo, even though it?s not serving them what so ever.

We also need to understand that all civilizations in history have collapsed when they?ve refused to address cultural systems that fail to produce the results they were designed for.

It may be brash to come out and say such things but today our justice system often subverts justice, our conventional health care system produces additional disease, our economic system produces an outcome that only favors the people who already have excess monetary resources and our political system has been hijacked by big business and no longer serves the interests of the common person. Our education system is priming the children to accept the current dysfunction that?s literally stealing their ability to contribute productively inside a fair and equitable society.

Basically there?s a couple thousand people who do benefit from our current dysfunctional systems in Canada but about 30 million suffer unnecessarily. There?s not a lot of time left for anyone on both sides of the fence to make changes before it?s too late. One side can drink, eat and smoke themselves into an early grave?and the rich can celebrate like the world is their oyster but it?s all going to come to a screeching halt for everyone unless we look at where all the dysfunction is really coming from. We need to pull the dysfunction out from the root.

Tune in next article where I review the top health myths that are causing most of the disease and obesity in our society today.

Women want a bigger voice in government | Majirox News

Japan has a poor record when it comes to women?s rights, ranking 101 out of 135 according to some statistics. A new political party founded as the result of a Facebook message is looking to change that, and to improve the lot of other disadvantaged groups as well as that of women in Japan.

TOKYO (majirox news) ? A new Japanese political party started as the result of a single Facebook comment held there first press conference in Tokyo. It already has more than 2,000 members, and the numbers are still rising. The All-Japan Obachan Party is aiming to change the role of women in politics and in everyday life.

?The members of both parties are almost all men wearing dark grey suits and discussing sensitive diplomatic problems concerning Senkaku Islands or changing the constitution of Japan without women?s opinions,? said Tomoko Satome, a doctor at Shiomidai Hospital in Kanagawa Prefecture, at a recent press conference in Tokyo.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe claims that he wants to increase the role of women in Japanese society. The new party points to his cabinet, which contains only two women, and disputes his claim.

?But it is a very gender biased society made by a male dominant society,? Satome said. ?Our situation is the same as the 1960s when I was born so we must act it change it, from the bottom to top, the top to bottom.?

According to the World Economic Forum, Japan fares badly when compared to other nations in terms of gender equality rated 101 out of 135. The new party wants to redress this: better rights, job opportunities, equal pay, and adequate levels of child care for women wanting to work.

Hiroko Inokuma, an associate professor at Tokyo City University, said at the press conference, ?I?m really surprised seeing women talk about politics, they spoke out and messaged about it. I believe this is the first time, and our activities brought this out wider and wider, and men can?t avoid our opinions in the future.?

The All-Japan Obachan Party fears that the traditionally minded ruling Liberal Democratic Party will promote old-style cultural values where women stay at home, stay quiet, and men work.

Hiromi Taguchi, a 26-year-old secretary, said, ?Japanese women need to participate in politics. We are way too quiet, and need to speak out on all of our country?s problems and policies, not just gender issues.?

In addition to campaigning for women?s rights, the members of the party wish to draw attention to other groups within Japanese society that they see as being disadvantaged.

This new party has helped to raise women?s issues in the country. However, what they really want, they say, is more representation in government and in the prime minister?s cabinet.

Trust the gang truce? Even a year later, Salvadorans skeptical.

Although a delicate truce between the MS-13 and 18th Street gangs has held for a year, 70 percent of Salvadorans say the gangs' word can't be trusted.

By Tim Muth,?Guest blogger / March 13, 2013

Jailed gang members play a board game at the maximum security jail of Izalco in Sonsonate last week. Jailed members of the country's two most powerful gangs MS-13 and the 18th Street gang (Mara 18), members of civic organizations and Bishop Fabio Colindres celebrated mass to mark the first anniversary since the two gangs signed a truce in March 2012 in an effort to reduce violent crimes in the country.

[For background on the El Salvador gang truce, see The Christian Science Monitor's feature package with stories here, here, and here.]

It is one thing to talk about El Salvador's gang truce, which celebrated its one year anniversary last weekend, in blog posts and newspaper articles. It is another thing to live in communities where crime is prevalent. How do the bulk of Salvadorans view the truce?
?
In?polling by the University of Central America?during mid-November 2012, there were high levels of skepticism about the truce. 66.4 percent of those polled believed that the truce had reduced the level of crime little or not at all. 89.4 percent of the respondents had little or no trust in the truce.

La Prensa Grafica (LPG) polling?in February 2013 showed that?55.2 percent of Salvadorans had a negative opinion of the truce while only 29.7 percent had a positive view. The respondents were about evenly split over whether or not there should be negotiations with the gangs. And 70 percent said that one could not trust the gangs to fulfill their promises.
?
When LPG asked people for the reasons for the gang problem, 36.2 percent blamed the parents and the educational system of the country, while 30.7 percent focused on economic factors. According to LPG, respondents from the middle and upper classes were more likely to blame the breakdown of families, while persons from the lower classes were more likely to focus on economic forces behind young men joining gangs. Salvadorans are split on whether resolving the gang problem requires more iron fist policies including the death penalty, or whether there should be a focus on job creation, and re-insertion of gang members into society.
?
?In short, the people on El Salvador's streets are uncertain about where this process is headed and whether it is even a good thing...?

CBS tries multiplatform syndication for The Good Wife on Amazon, Hulu Plus and TV

Almost by definition, TV syndication in the modern era leads us to wonder just where and when we'll get to see a show online. For CBS' The Good Wife, streaming on third-party services will be a cornerstone of an uncommon, multi-step syndication strategy that puts the internet first. The drama will be available for Amazon Prime Instant Video subscribers starting March 14th, expanding beyond its existing availability for purchase. Hulu Plus members, meanwhile, will get their own turn at streaming in September. Traditional TV will still be around, but it's notably pushed to the back of the queue -- Hallmark won't have airing rights until January 2014, and most other broadcasters will be denied until a year after Hulu. The new approach another sign that CBS' one-time cold shoulder to some forms of digital distribution is growing warmer and warmer.
