20 ways to reuse coffee grounds, tea leaves - Mother Nature Network

?

It takes a brave and hearty (and spartan) soul to give up coffee and tea in the name of food miles. Many do, but morning caffeine is the guilty pleasure that whispers in a voice too alluring for many to resist. One thing is for sure: it's generally a long journey for beans and leaves to travel from exotic climes to the kitchen counter ? so we may as well honor them with some extra chores before condemning them to the trash. For those who add their spent dregs to the compost bin, you can still do so in many of these applications once their mission has been accomplished.

?

What to do with coffee grounds

1. Soften skin

Exfoliate with a body scrub made of coffee grounds, coconut oil and a little brown sugar. Gently massage it on in the shower, rinse, be soft.

?

2. Please the flowers

Use coffee grounds as mulch for acid-loving plants ? roses, azaleas, rhododendrons, evergreens, hydrangeas and camellias. They like coffee grounds for the natural acidity and nutrients they add to the soil.

?

3. Sadden the ants

Sprinkle coffee grounds around areas of ant infestation to deter them.

?

4. Deter gastropods

Used grounds are said to repel snails and slugs, so sprinkle them in problem areas.

?

5. Simplify fireplace cleaning

Before cleaning the fireplace, sprinkle with dampened used coffee grounds, which will weigh down the ash and thus eliminate clouds of smoke-flavored dust.

?

6. Make a sepia dye

Soak used grounds in hot water and use as a dye bath for Easter eggs, fabric and paper for a lovely, soft brown tinge.

?

7. Keep cats at bay

Keep kitties out of the garden with a mixture of orange peels and used coffee grounds distributed around plants.

?

8. Encourage the carrots

To boost a carrot harvest, mix seeds with dried coffee grounds before sowing. The extra bulk makes the wee seeds easier to manage, while the coffee aroma can nourish the soil and help repel pests.

?

What to do with tea leaves and tea bags

?

Some tips call for dried leaves, here?s how. When you?re finished brewing tea, place the leaves into a large strainer or colander. Press out as much moisture as possible, and then spread the leaves on paper. Let the leaves dry thoroughly, turning over several times in the process. Also note that wet tea leaves stain, so if you are using wet tea leaves on or near a porous surface, be sure to test in an inconspicuous place first.

?

9. Tame stings and burns

Cool tea bags can bring relief when applied to bug bites and minor burns, including sunburn. For overall skin irritation, put spent tea leaves in a bath and soak.

?

10. Soothe your eyes

The tannins in tea have anti-inflammatory effects, which is why cool ones are often employed on puffy eyes. (The chill also helps with swelling.)

?

11. Feed the garden

Use tea leaves as food for garden plants ? green tea is high in nitrogen, and as a bonus, the leaves can ward off pests and insects. This is also good for houseplants, so add old tea leaves to their water.

?

12. Boost potted plants

When potting plants, place a few used tea bags on top of the drainage layer at the bottom of the planter before adding soil. The tea bags will help to retain water and will also leach some nutrients into the potting medium.

?

13. Quell the cat box smell

Sprinkle used, dried tea leaves in litter boxes to help reduce the smell.

?

14. Eliminate other pet odors

Sprinkle dried, used green tea leaves on your pet?s pillow, bed, in the doghouse, or other smelly spots to eliminate odor.

?

15. Freshen the carpet

Sprinkle dry tea leaves onto the carpet, crush them lightly and let sit for 10 minutes, then vacuum. This will refresh the carpet and deodorize your vacuum cleaner and bag. (Especially helpful if you have pets.)

?

16. Treat the dog

As an extravagance, loose leaf gunpowder tea is a treat for dogs to roll around in. It?s great for the aroma and luster it adds to the coat.

?

17. Freshen mats and beds?

It is common in Southeast Asia to wash straw sleeping mats in tubs of water to which tea has been added. The tea works as a deodorizer, so you can apply this method to yoga mats and air mattresses.

?

18. Save the fridge

If you?re out of baking soda, place dried, used green tea bags or leaves in a small open bowl in your refrigerator to help absorb odors.

?

19. Wash your hands

Rid your hands of food odors (garlic, onions, etc.) by rubbing them with wet green tea leaves, an instant deodorizer.

?

20. Deodorize kitchen surfaces

Rub wet tea leaves on cutting boards and counters to remove food odors.

In a historic trip to a long shunned land, Obama on Monday showered praise and promises of more U.S. help to Myanmar if the Asian nation keeps building its new democracy. (AP Photo/Carolyn Kaster)

(AP) ? Making history twice within hours, President Barack Obama on Monday became the first U.S. president to set foot in Cambodia, a country once known for its Khmer Rouge "killing fields." He left behind flag-waving crowds on the streets of Myanmar, the once internationally shunned nation now showing democratic promise.

Unlike the visit to Myanmar, where Obama seemed to revel in that nation's new hope, the White House has made clear that Obama is only in Cambodia to attend an East Asia Summit and said the visit should not be seen as an endorsement of Prime Minister Hun Sen and the government he has led since the 1980s.

Indeed, Obama's arrival in Cambodia lacked the euphoria of his greeting in Yangon, Myanmar, where tens of thousands of people lined city streets to cheer the first American president to visit a country that had long been isolated from the West. "You gave us hope," Obama declared in Yangon.

In Phnom Penh, the sun was already setting by the time Air Force One landed. Small clusters of Cambodians gathered in the streets to watch the motorcade pass, but there was none of the outpouring that greeted Obama in Myanmar.

Speaking to a national audience from the University of Yangon, Obama offered a "hand of friendship" and a lasting U.S. commitment, yet a warning as well. He said the new civilian government must nurture democracy or watch it, and U.S. support, disappear.

The visit to Myanmar was the centerpiece of a four-day trip to Southeast Asia that began in Bangkok and will end Tuesday in Cambodia, where Obama will visit with Chinese, Japanese and Southeast Asia leaders in addition to attending the East Asia Summit.

Obama celebrated the history of what he was witnessing in Myanmar ? a nation shedding years of military rule, and a relationship between two nations changing fast.

"This remarkable journey has just begun," he said.

In a notable detour from U.S. policy, the president referred to the nation as Myanmar in his talks with President Thein Sein. That is the name preferred by the former military regime and the new government, rather than Burma, the old name and the one favored by democracy advocates and the U.S. government.

Deputy national security adviser Ben Rhodes said afterward that Obama's use of Myanmar was "a diplomatic courtesy" that doesn't change the U.S. position that the country is still Burma.

On his first trip abroad since his re-election earlier this month, Obama's motorcade sped him to the lakeside home in Yangon of longtime opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi. He hugged her and lauded her as a personal inspiration. Suu Kyi spent most of the past 20 years in house detention at her home.

In remarks after their meeting, Suu Kyi echoed Obama's tone with an admonition of her own, one that could have been directed at her own ruling party as much as to the United States:

"The most difficult time in any transition is when we think that success is in sight," she said. "Then we have to be very careful that we're not lured by the mirage of success."

Rhodes said Obama was moved by the opportunity to visit Suu Kyi at her home ? and was pleased to see that she had prominently displayed a stuffed replica of the president's dog Bo in the house. Obama gave Suu Kyi the stuffed animal when she visited Washington earlier this year.

Crowds swelled at every intersection, yelling affectionately for Obama and his secretary of state, Hillary Rodham Clinton.

"You are the legend hero of our world," one banner read.

Obama spoke at a university that was once the center of government opposition, and his message was as much a call for Myanmar to continue in its promising steps as it was a tribute to democracy in general. He held up the United States as an example of its triumph and its imperfections.

Coinciding with the president's visit, the government of Myanmar announced further human rights steps to review prisoner cases and de-escalate conflicts in ethnic regions of the country.

But Obama urged even more, calling for a government where, as he put it, "those in power must accept constraints."

"The flickers of progress that we have seen must not be extinguished," Obama said in an address televised to the nation.

Rhodes said the president was moved by the throngs of people who lined the streets to greet him during the visit. The president made one unscheduled stop at the Shwedagon Pagoda. After seeing the pagoda as Air Force One approached Yangon, then seeing the outpouring of support from the citizens for whom the site means so much, Obama personally decided to make the unscheduled stop, Rhodes said.

As Obama arrived in Cambodia, he was dogged by concerns from human rights groups that have cast Hun Sen as a violent authoritarian and have voiced apprehension that Obama's visit will be perceived within Cambodia as validation of the prime minister's regime. But administration officials say Obama, when he meets with Hun Sen on Monday, will raise concerns about the government's human rights record.

Still, many Cambodians credit Hun Sen with helping the country emerge from the horrors of the 1970s Khmer Rouge reign, when systematic genocide left 1.7 million dead. Vietnam invaded and ousted that regime in 1979. By 1985, Hun Sen had become prime minister.

Why is Susan Rice on the hot seat over Benghazi attack? (+video)

Republicans vow to get to the bottom of UN Ambassador Rice?s role in reporting what happened when the US consulate in Benghazi, Libya, was attacked on the anniversary of 9/11.

As the Obama administration?s first major spokesman following an attack that killed US Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other embassy personnel, Ms. Rice left the impression that ?extremist elements? had joined a ?spontaneous protest? against an anti-Islam YouTube video that was roiling the region.

Although President Obama strongly defended Rice at his first post-election press conference last week ? suggesting his opponents should come after him if they have a problem ? Republicans aren?t letting up on Rice, reportedly at the top of Obama?s list to become Secretary of State when Hillary Clinton resigns as expected.

IN PICTURES:?Libya's critical transition

"She's going to have to come in and testify at some point, whether it's in a closed hearing or an open hearing," Sen. Saxby Chambliss, vice chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, said on "Fox News Sunday.?

Sen. Lindsey Graham suggests a strong political motive in Rice?s characterization of the attack, particularly when she added that the United States under Obama?s leadership had ?decimated al Qaeda.? Intelligence officials and the President later acknowledged that terrorists likely affiliated with al Qaeda had been part of the attack.

?The story she told helped reinforce the political narrative helpful to the president," Sen. Graham said on NBC's "Meet the Press" show. "I don't know what she knew, but I know the story she told was misleading.?

"Had the truth come out a few weeks before the election that our consulate in Benghazi had been overrun by an al Qaeda-sponsored, affiliated militia, that destroys the narrative we have been hearing for months that al Qaeda's been dismantled," Graham said.

Rep. Mike Rogers, chairman of the House Intelligence Committee,?suggests ? without providing any evidence ? that the administration changed the ?talking points? provided Rice before she appeared on five Sunday news shows five days after the attack at Benghazi.

?The intelligence community had it right, and they had it right early,? Rep. Rogers said on ?Meet the Press.??

In closed House and Senate hearings last week, former CIA Director David Petraeus indicated that US intelligence officials knew from the start that terrorists had carried out the attack, according to lawmakers who spoke with reporters after the hearings. But the retired Army four-star general could not ? or chose not to ? say how the initial talking points had been changed.

Democrats are pushing back against Republican charges in the matter.

Senate Intelligence Committee Chairwoman Dianne Feinstein acknowledges that one day after the Benghazi episode, ?Petraeus very clearly said that it was a terrorist attack.? But she says Rice was only able to speak ?publicly on unclassified speaking points.??

Officials have said that initial public statements (including Rice?s) used the word ?extremists? ? both to conceal intelligence-gathering sources and methods (so as not to reveal the terrorist groups it was tracking) and also because that was seen as the more inclusive word.

?There was only one thing changed, I?ve looked into it and I believe it to be fact, that was the word ?consulate? was changed to ?mission,?? Sen. Feinstein said on ?Meet the Press.? ?That?s the only change that anyone in the White House made, and I have checked this out.?

?What has concerned me about this is really the politicization of a public statement that was put out by the entire intelligence committee, which Susan Rice, on the 16th, who was asked to go before the people and use that statement, did,? Feinstein added. ?She was within the context of that statement, and for this, she has been pilloried for two months.?

Dexter, Season 7

Michael C. Hall as Dexter Morgan in 'Dexter.'

Michael C. Hall as Dexter Morgan in 'Dexter'

Every week in?Slate?s?Dexter?TV club, Katy Waldman will have an IM conversation with a different?Dexter?fan. This week, she rehashes episode 7.8 with Dr. Marisa Mauro, a forensic psychologist and former blogger for Psychology Today.

Katy Waldman: It?s back! This episode surprised me in a lot of ways, but maybe the most shocking part was the resurrection of the Deb-loves-Dex storyline. When Dexter admits to seeing Hannah McKay, Deb explains that the relationship hurts her so much?maybe even more so than the Dark Passenger?because she has romantic feelings for her brother. ???

Marisa Mauro: I was surprised to see this storyline again as well. I had thought they might have decided to ditch it. I think that the writers are trying to spotlight Deb's inner conflicts this season. They have been exploring her sense of morality (versus just ?following the rules?) by looking at her vacillating acceptance of Dexter as a serial killer. Maybe giving her a second transgression to wrestle with?incest?helps develop that theme.

Waldman: Yes! Though in past seasons Deb has been unstable in other ways, she?s always struck me as a reliable moral compass. But increasingly, season 7 is presenting her as morally ambiguous, not to mention obsessive, controlling and deeply messed-up.

And perhaps not coincidentally, the show's sympathies seem to be shifting towards Hannah McKay. She is helpful and supportive to Dexter, counseling him about Isaac and reminding him to appreciate his family. She even offers her vulnerable side to Deb (?For some reason I care what you think?I?m sorry.?) ?

Mauro: I've heard from others who have read the Dexter books that his children eventually became his accomplices to his murders. As that seems like a bit too much for the show's viewers to swallow, I have been wondering if the writers might be trying to groom Hannah's character so that she might become Dexter's killing partner.

Waldman: Do you find her sympathetic?

Mauro: I do not. I am not buying into that whole impressionable teenage girl in love thing. You?

Waldman: I don?t believe she was ?in over her head? when she committed murder with Wayne. But she?s winning me over in other ways, which is odd, because I was so firmly on Team Deb going into this episode! Hannah?s desire for a family sounded sincere and made her seem?pure and loving. But you are the forensic psychologist! Can psychopaths dream of domestic bliss?

Mauro: Sure, I think that's possible. Dexter shows similar instincts with his kids. But unlike non-psychopathic people, that yearning for family might be based in more self-serving reasons.

I know you?re considering joining Team Hannah, but the thing about Antisocial and Psychopathic people is that they are extremely manipulative and charming. They also tend to be very perceptive of others. This allows them to victimize others with great ease.

Waldman: Is Hannah victimizing Dexter?

Mauro: I'm not sure yet. She could be because he is on to her. But it could also be that she does have some real feelings for him.

Waldman: Then there?s that other charmer, Isaac. We saw a much more sympathetic side to him when Dexter confronted him in the gay bar. He even suggested that he and Dex might have been great friends?if only Dexter hadn?t slain his lover. The parallels between Isaac-Dex-Victor and Dex-Trinity-Rita are undeniable. Plus the poor guy was recently expelled from the Koshka Brotherhood and has all manner of hit men/Avon ladies after him.

Mauro: It's like a whole season of "Murderers have feelings too." I was thinking that Dexter might just spare Isaac. We did see the Ukrainian packing up at the hotel later on, so maybe he will get home unscathed. I also thought that the bar scene demonstrated that both Dexter and Isaac are capable of empathy?perhaps even love.

Waldman: With Isaac gone, who would fill his shoes as chief villain? George Nabokov still seems like a small fry to me?nowhere near interesting or evil enough to challenge Dexter.

Mauro: What about LaGuerta? She seems to be uncovering Dexter's tracks.

Waldman: Yes. She was sleuthing around his kill-boat as the closing music played. That?s bad news for both Morgans.

Episode 8 is called "Argentina." It struck me that our three main killers?Isaac, Dexter and Hannah?all yearn for some kind of utopia, where I guess they are unconditionally accepted for who they are. Hannah wants Argentina. Isaac wants Micronesia, or interstitially the gay bar. Dexter wants ?Hannah?s house, I suppose? We?re drawn in and rooting for them. But this is crazy, right? I mean, it?s actually nuts for the show to analogize Isaac?s homosexuality with Dexter?s urge to kill people.

Mauro: Could the analogy be that in Isaac's mafia subculture his homosexuality makes him a target, while in Dexter's police department subculture his murderous ways make him a target?

As to your other point, it is certainly crazy to root for them, but I think we do because of the focus on their vulnerabilities. Most of us empathize with the vulnerable. And the show capitalizes on that fact?that most of us are capable of empathy. We are capable of connecting, if just in some small way, with even the most seemingly heinous of people. That doesn't mean that we excuse or accept their horrible actions.

Waldman: Or boneheaded actions?I?m thinking of Joey Quinn. George has a recording linking Quinn to the disappeared Sirko evidence. What do you see happening with that subplot?

Mauro: I think that Quinn's love for Nadia and fear of getting caught somehow by Miami Metro will keep him cooperating with George until he is caught or George some how disappears.

Waldman: Somehow disappears?

Mauro: Killed or set up maybe? Maybe even by Quinn to put a stop to it and free Nadia.

Waldman: I was fascinated to see Aster and Cody resurface, maybe to drive home the theme of family. Aster is experimenting with pot, and the show draws a connection between this small vice and Dexter's larger one. Also, through counseling Aster, Dex is able to communicate to Deb that her newfound bloodlust is a bad idea.

Mauro: Yes, Deb did seem to back down after that. But did she back down because she realized it was a bad idea or because she felt that Dexter was concerned about her wellbeing? In other words, did she internalize the idea that it would be wrong for her to turn to murder, or was her backing down really just her reflecting Dexter's wishes?

Waldman: Good question! Do you buy Dexter as a great father? He talks about childproofing Debra's home and he seems very skillful with a sullen teenager.

Mauro: Yes I do. I think Dexter is capable of a lot of positive qualities, which he has a hard time seeing in himself. But I also believe that Dexter was made a serial killer. By Harry.

Mauro: Dexter had some symptoms of Conduct Disorder as a child (really just one?killing animals) that could have been treated. Not all children with symptoms of Conduct Disorder become Antisocial Adults. Instead of getting Dexter help, Harry fostered it, turning Dexter in to a tool to accomplish his own selfish desires. I think Harry was the real psychopath here. From what we know about him, he seems to have more psychopathic traits than Dexter. He is glib, grandiose, cunning and manipulative, and a pathological liar. He does not take responsibility for turning Dexter into a killer. He had promiscuous sexual behavior: cheated on his wife. He doesn't have real empathy for Dexter or Deb, just sees their vulnerabilities and exploits them. He doesn't feel remorseful for the things he has done to his family or the murders he helped Dexter to accomplish. Through Deb and Dexter's childhood flashbacks, we know he had some problems controlling his anger.

Waldman: You?ve written a lot about narcissistic families. Does Dex come from one of those?

Mauro: In the sense that a narcissistic family is one whose needs center on the parents, yes I do. The needs of this family centered squarely on Harry. His need to be seen as a good cop and crime-stopper, if you will.

Waldman: How would you treat Dexter if he showed up in your care?

Mauro: I think that he should have been treated as a child. For any possible PTSD or at least the experience of witnessing his mother killed and also for killing the animals, which could have been from PTSD. I think that play therapy might have helped him to process the killing as a little boy. When he was older and caught killing the animals, maybe processing the thoughts and feelings leading to that behavior and teaching alternative coping skills. Family therapy would have also been a must to teach Dexter how to use available social support and to work with the family on their response. Obviously, parenting education was also in order.

Waldman: Are he, Hannah, and Isaac unsalvageable by now?

Mauro: I can't say for sure, but age certainly helps! Antisocial behavior decreases with age.

Waldman: Maybe they?ll all wind up together in a few years, living a quiet domestic life in Argentina. Here?s hoping!

LIO 11/19: Think Poverty, Be Prosperous! What? | Living It Out

Click here?to download a printable version of the Daily Bible Study for today.

It?s true, Americans spend a lot of time and money upgrading their stuff. But that?s not all. Americans spend just as much money on trying to upgrade their lives through the ever growing ?self help? industry. In 2009, Forbes Magazine reported that ?Americans spent $11 billion in 2008 on self-improvement books, CDs, seminars, coaching and stress-management programs which equates to 13.6% more than they did back in 2005, according to Marketdata Enterprises? The latest forecast shows that statistic will grow by 6.2% annually through 2012.?

Why are Americans searching? What do they want? In a word, hope. To say it another way, they are searching for the ultimate upgrade. Sadly, it appears they?ve been bamboozled into believing that if they follow the latest trend or new-age thinking, they will satisfy their desire for an upgrade.

Thankfully, Lee issued a ?wake-up? call. Great news?we can stop spending our money on the latest fad or self-help trend and instead spend time upgrading our lives by studying Christ?s teachings and adopting his life precepts as our own.

Undoubtedly, non-believers will struggle with the concept of applying Christ?s thinking to their way of life. Even people that believe in Christ struggle and try to make sense of it all by creating their own version of who Christ was and is. But we implore you, don?t fall asleep, don?t be fooled. These individuals, or perhaps you, may not believe in the miracles of the Bible, or may be leery about taking the Bible literally, but who doesn?t hold Jesus in highest regard? Even critics of Christianity refer to Jesus as a prophet, or at the very least a great teacher and/or life coach.

So where do we start? By upgrading our thinking. We must think like Christ. Lee decided the best way for us to learn how we can begin to think like Christ is to talk about the greatest sermon Jesus ever gave? The Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5:1-2, NASB). Here, Jesus presents one contrary life practice after another, but in the end it is, as one psychologist calls it, ?a life blueprint for positive mental health.? Lee guided us through the eight Beatitudes, which Jesus used to launch his talk and lay out the pathway to the ?blessed? or ?happy life?.

We hope after listening to this message and by doing this Bible study, you will be like the disciples, amazed at this teaching (Matthew 7:28, NLT). We pray that you will allow God to transform you into a new person by changing the way you think (Romans 12:2, NLT). We guarantee it will change your life. After all, it?s the pathway to a blessed life!

Spoken Word:

?Wake Up?

?Because I know there is more to this life than meets the eye and love is the heartbeat that keeps me alive. So against the mundane, I open my eyes, to a new way of thinking a new way to shine.

Cause it?s God?s love given through Christ that inspires me to change my thinking, my emotions and desires and trust, beyond what I can hold or unfold, beyond culture and reason, this story is told.?

MONDAY ? Think Poverty, Be Prosperous! What?
Big Point: A surefire way to prosperity is to be deeply aware of your own spiritual poverty and wretchedness.

You will probably never see the title of today?s study on the cover of Forbes magazine. You likely have heard the exact opposite: to be prosperous, you should think like the prosperous or the rich. However, Matthew 5:3 says, ?Blessed are the poor in spirit for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.? Someone poor in spirit honestly acknowledges their own spiritual poverty, wretchedness and need for Christ.

In their book, How People Grow, Dr. Henry Cloud and James Townsend explain that: ?The Greek for ?poor in spirit? indicates a cringing beggar, absolutely dependent on others for survival. It?s not a flattering picture of us. You don?t see people in church greeting each other with??Wow, you?re such a cringing beggar, I?d like for you to mentor me.? Yet, the kingdom of heaven belongs to those who experience their dependency.?

They are blessed and experience prosperity, which means they flourish and thrive despite their bank account balances. This way of thinking will, no doubt, require one to eat a few slices of ?humble pie?, or perhaps the whole thing. Psalm 37:11 supports Matthew 5:3 by saying that ?the humble will inherit the land and will delight themselves in abundant prosperity?.

So is that how you see it? If you want to change your life and find the pathway to the blessed life, upgrade your thinking to the spiritual poverty level!

?To be poor in spirit is not to lack courage, but to acknowledge spiritual bankruptcy. It confesses ones unworthiness before God and utter dependence on Him.?

- Carson, Expositors Bible Commentary

Answer:

What does it mean to be blessed?

Each Beatitude begins with the word ?blessed?. The English word ?beatitude? comes from the Greek word ?beatus? (blessed). The word blessed has Greek and Hebrew origins that mean happy and fortunate. It also has Latin origins from which we get the word beautiful. Each beatitude tells us how to be blessed by God. Blessed means more than happiness. It implies the fortunate or enviable state of those who are in God?s Kingdom. The beatitudes do not promise laughter, pleasure or earthly prosperity. Being blessed by God means the experience of hope and joy independent of outward circumstances. To find hope and joy, the deepest form of happiness, follow Jesus no matter what the cost (Life Application Study Bible, comments on Matthew 5:3).

What does Jesus say self-righteousness leads to in Luke 18:9-14? What did the tax collector do in verse 13 that Jesus thought should be exalted?

Luke 18:9-14 (New Living Translation)

9 Then Jesus told this story to some who had great confidence in their own righteousness and scorned everyone else: 10 ?Two men went to the Temple to pray. One was a Pharisee, and the other was a despised tax collector. 11 The Pharisee stood by himself and prayed this prayer: ?I thank you, God, that I am not a sinner like everyone else. For I don?t cheat, I don?t sin, and I don?t commit adultery. I?m certainly not like that tax collector! 12 I fast twice a week, and I give you a tenth of my income.? 13 ?But the tax collector stood at a distance and dared not even lift his eyes to heaven as he prayed. Instead, he beat his chest in sorrow, saying, ?O God, be merciful to me, for I am a sinner.? 14 I tell you, this sinner, not the Pharisee, returned home justified before God. For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.?

Did you get a chance to watch Patrick Hickey?s upgrade video this past weekend? One of the primary reasons for Patrick?s upgrade was that he began to understand his need for Christ and that he was spiritually bankrupt. Have you reached that point? In what ways can you live with a ?poor in spirit? attitude?

PRAY?God, what do you want me to know and do?
